How We Calculate Your BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor Equation)
This calculator estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most widely accepted and validated predictive equations for estimating resting energy expenditure in healthy adults. The calculation is based on your age, sex, height, and weight.
For Men: BMR = (10 × Weight in kg) + (6.25 × Height in cm) − (5 × Age in years) + 5
For Women: BMR = (10 × Weight in kg) + (6.25 × Height in cm) − (5 × Age in years) − 161
The calculated BMR represents the estimated number of calories your body requires each day to maintain essential physiological functions while at complete rest. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is then estimated by applying your selected Physical Activity Level (PAL).
WHO South Asian BMI Cut-offs vs. Western Guidelines
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening tool used to assess weight status, but the relationship between BMI and metabolic health varies across populations. Research shows that South Asians tend to have a higher percentage of body fat and greater abdominal (visceral) fat at lower BMI values than many Western populations. As a result, the risk of metabolic conditions may begin at lower BMI levels.
For this reason, lower BMI cut-offs are recommended for assessing overweight and obesity in South Asian populations, including Indians.
